OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26, 2026, describing it in the official announcement as bringing "fast and capable computer use to everyone". The same day, GitHub made the model generally available across GitHub Copilot. The announcement pages carry dates without times of day. Read the Copilot changelog entry.

Positioning and price

Per GitHub's changelog, GPT-6.1 Terra is designed for everyday agentic coding and terminal work at a lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol. In GitHub's early testing it solved noticeably more terminal and C# coding tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra — the predecessor retired from Copilot on October 19 — and it works in focused, consolidated steps on well-scoped tasks. In Copilot the model is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing.

Availability in Copilot

Terra is offered to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users in the model picker across Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile on iOS and Android, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse. Rollout is gradual. Copilot Enterprise and Business administrators manage access through the model policy; new models are enabled by default unless the global default was turned off.

The performance comparison above comes from GitHub's early testing rather than an independent benchmark. OpenAI's own launch page was not programmatically accessible at collection time; this report relies on the official RSS summary and GitHub's changelog.
