The September 30, 2026 entry in Google's Gemini release notes introduces skills in chat. Google describes them as reusable instructions that can match a prompt and work together on a task. The entry says rollout starts globally for adults, with more users coming later. Read the dated official release note.

What is established, and what is planned

The same entry says skills will replace Gems and that Google intends to migrate Gems automatically when that transition happens. That is a future transition described in a release note. It does not establish that Gems have already disappeared for every account, or that every reader has the new feature today.

A useful first skill

Our suggested trial is a recurring piece of work whose rules you can write down clearly. For a newsletter, that might mean a fixed structure, a short introduction, and a requirement that dates and prices come from the supplied source material. Keep the instructions focused on that one task.

Test it against three different inputs: a complete brief, a brief missing an important fact, and a brief with conflicting information. A useful reusable instruction should help the assistant handle the missing or conflicting fact explicitly. A polished result that invents the absent detail is still a failed test.

Keep reusable instructions maintainable

  • Give each skill a clear purpose and a small set of examples.
  • Write down the conditions under which it should run.
  • Review overlapping skills for instructions that conflict.
  • Retest when a workflow or source format changes.
  • Keep a copy of instructions you depend on during a product transition.

These are our practical suggestions for evaluating the feature. The release note does not prove how it performs on your tasks. Reusing a prompt can save repetition, but a price, date or factual claim in the output still needs the underlying evidence.

Start with the official Gemini entry points and check your account's interface. Our source verification guide explains how to audit the resulting text. This report covers the September 30 entry; the site's publication date is October 12.
