Gemini app now generates, previews and edits files in chat

Google announced on October 29, 2026 that the Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit files directly in chat. The announcement page carries a date without a time of day. Read the announcement.

What works, and where

  • PDF: preview and editing supported on both web and mobile.
  • Other formats — Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code — are supported on the web only.

How it works in practice

Files generated or uploaded in a conversation can be expanded to full screen to type edits directly; text can be highlighted to ask questions about that section; and Gemini can be asked to refine the file, including text and visuals. Google's example: turn uploaded handwritten lecture notes into a PDF study guide, then edit it manually or by highlighting sections for Gemini to revise.

Availability

Per the announcement, these capabilities are available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available. No plan tiers or rollout stages are mentioned; which file types can be created from scratch versus only edited was not specified, and this report does not assume beyond the announcement.
