Gemini 3.8 Live introduces two approaches to voice tasks

Google's September 15 announcement separates a scale-focused live model from an Extended Thinking variant for more complex tasks.

Google announced Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking on September 15, 2026, and updated its announcement on September 17. It presents the first as a model for scalable conversation and the second for more complex reasoning during voice interaction. Read the original announcement.

What Google describes

The article describes visual context, conversation across supported languages, and background tool execution while a conversation continues. Developer rollout includes the Gemini API and AI Studio. Enterprise previews and consumer integrations follow separate access paths; a model announcement alone does not establish access through every product.

Evaluate conversation and task completion together

Our suggested test is a short, repeatable scenario with a known result. Ask the assistant to explain a simple screen, then interrupt with a correction, and finish with a request that needs one permitted tool. Measure whether it uses the correction and whether the tool's final result matches what it tells you.

A quick spoken acknowledgement is useful feedback, but it is different from a completed action. In your own interface, make the distinction visible: received, working, completed, or failed. Do not count a confident narration as confirmation that a booking, file edit or other operation succeeded.

Questions before a production trial

  • What happens when speech is interrupted or the connection drops?
  • How does the interface show an action waiting for confirmation?
  • Can the user correct an instruction before the action completes?
  • Which languages and noisy environments matter for your audience?
  • What are the measured audio, tool and retry costs for the whole scenario?

This is our evaluation framework, rather than an independent claim about model quality. Repeat the same scenario across settings and retain failures as well as successful demonstrations. A voice workflow needs both understandable conversation and an outcome the user can verify.
