Anthropic announced the Anthropic Cyber Mission on October 8, 2026, described as a long-term commitment to securing widely depended-upon systems. The announcement page carries a date without a time of day. The mission begins in two areas and launches two concrete programs alongside it. Read the announcement.
What launched
- Critical Infrastructure Defense Program (CIDP): brings frontier models, on-site engineers and threat research to defenders of operational technology behind power grids, water systems and transportation networks, and to government systems.
- OSS Scanner: gives open-source projects regular security scans from Anthropic's strongest models, free of charge.
Context
Anthropic frames the mission around the gap between how easy it has become to find vulnerabilities and how hard verifying, prioritizing and fixing them remains. The post says state-sponsored adversaries have spent years gaining footholds across sectors, and that critical-infrastructure defenders and the open-source community face resource shortages. Operational technology in particular often cannot be taken offline to patch, so known vulnerabilities can stay unresolved for years.
The mission builds on Project Glasswing, which Anthropic merged into the expanded Cyber Verification Program earlier in the same week. Anthropic says it will deploy engineering talent and provide tools and funding for those securing critical infrastructure and open-source software, and will expand the mission into new areas over time.
